The tradition of documenting botanical specimens using the cyanotype process dates back to 1843 when Anna Atkins published British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions.  Rather than representing an ideal plant specimen, my work diverges from tradition by exploring imperfection and impermanence. My photographs feature humble leaves that are blemished, irregular, and withered.  I photograph them in groups and pairs to express relationships and suggest a narrative.  Blurred leaves represent the terror and beauty of sudden and uncontrollable events and the transition to a new state of being.   Inspired by personal experience and recent events, I create these images to reckon with transience and loss, memory and acceptance. 

Prints are 15" x 21" on Arches Aquarelle 140lb hot press paper.
